Methanol, which is an alcohol, is mixed with the oil through a chemical process called transesterification, during which glycerin is removed from the oil and methanol and lye serve as a catalyst for the reaction. The supplies used to create biodiesel will also yield glycerin as a byproduct, which can be used as a degreaser or handsoap.
